Many activities in research and teaching laboratories at the university generate waste regulated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and/or the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. Hazardous materials are substances that have hazardous characteristics. Characteristics can be flammable, corrosive, reactive, toxic, poisonous, carcinogenic, radioactive, and biohazardous. Wastes containing these materials are considered hazardous because they present a potential risk to human health and/or the environment.
Hazardous waste must be properly packaged, labeled, and segregated. Packaging should consist of an approved container which is compatible with the waste it contains.
