Rutgers Camden Police Officers might be walking a little prouder these days, and with good reason. They have moved into a more modern and functional space, just three blocks from the main campus. Prior to this, Camden RUPD was housed in a campus Facilities building which lacked many of the necessities and amenities normally found in a police headquarters.
Located on the first floor of the 40,000 square foot building at 25 North 5th Street, the Camden RUPD now have a more secure location including sound proof rooms, card reader access entries, and evidence storage rooms. The first floor of the newly renovated building includes the RUPD and Rutgers—Camden Human Resources. The building’s second floor will house Rutgers Business Services, Events, and Finance. The office of Information Technology will occupy the third floor.
The building formerly housed the Camden Prosecutor’s office for many years. Rutgers purchased the building in 2018, long after the prosecutor’s office relocated. The building is being renovated in three phases.
Phase I, now complete, encompassed the second and third floor renovations. Phase II, almost complete, included the first floor and basement renovations.
Phase III, expected to begin in September, will focus on the outside of the building, and will include upgrades to the stair tower to create a focal point of the building. An accessibility ramp and a physical training space for police will also be included in Phase III.
“This is yet another example of our commitment to Camden,” said Senior Facilities Project Manager, Joey Kociolek. “The Central Administration Building is now conveniently located between the main campus and the Camden Nursing and Science Building. Once complete, it will truly serve as a revitalization to this community.”
