Class of 1902 Gate
The Class of 1902 Memorial Gateway commands the entrance from the north to Queen’s Campus from Hamilton Street and the Voorhees Mall/Neilson Campus. Presented by the graduating Class of 1902, the gateway was the first class gift presented to Rutgers other than a stained glass window at Kirkpatrick Chapel. The wrought iron arch frames a classic vista of Old Queens most familiar to Rutgers’ undergraduates making the Class of 1902 Memorial Gateway one of the most frequently photographed structures at Rutgers. The lantern that hangs from the arch is etched with “1902” on two glass panels. Brownstone piers are surmounted by two of the four identical stone globes that once topped the original gate at the corner of George and Somerset Streets. Walls, stairs, and benches are also stone, with wrought iron gates and handrails. The Class of 1902 resolved at their 1905 reunion to perpetuate the beautification of their gateway through annual giving, but no living alumni remain. Restoration of the gateway was funded by the Class of 1956 on the occasion of their 50th reunion. “1956” has been added to the remaining glass panels to recognize the stewardship of the Class of 1956.
