Ana Olvera Medina (center), with ESL instructors Jessica Garon, left, and Lisa Carvalho, right, became a U.S. citizen
after three years of studying English through IP&O’s myPath program.

When Ana Olvera Medina joined Rutgers three years ago, she immediately started taking the English as a Second Language (ESL) classes offered by IP&O’s myPath Training and Employee Development group.

“The opportunity that the university offers to the employees to learn English as a second language motivated me to register for the class three years ago,” said Olvera Medina, a Mexico City native and IP&O custodian.

Olvera Medina said that the teachers are always well prepared and there is no fear about learning a new language. It helps, as well, that her supervisor, Marc Lorenzo, encourages his employees to take the classes. “My supervisor constantly motivates his employees to learn,” she said.

Lisa Carvalho, myPath Instructional Course Designer and Jessica Garon, myPath Senior Instructional Designer, teach the ESL classes and recognized Olvera Medina for her dedication. “She’s very dedicated and comes to every class,” said Carvalho. “She’s not afraid to practice,” added Garon.

After three years of going to classes, Olvera Medina made the decision to apply for citizenship. “I started to review the citizenship questions with my co-worker, Maria Walsh, who constantly guided me and practiced with me.”

In August, Olvera Medina became a citizen of the United States. “I am very proud of myself because my dedication to learn English helped me become a United States citizen,” she said.

Congratulations Ana Olvera Medina!
