Class of 1882 Gate
The Class of 1882 Memorial Gateway frames the entrance to Queen’s Campus from the southwest at the corner of Somerset Street and College Avenue at Winants Hall. The Class of 1882 presented the gate in 1907 at their class reunion. The flat wrought iron arch is intricately detailed with the class year 1882 embedded in the scrollwork. The main posts are capped with brownstone. The gateway is flanked with curved brick screen walls punctuated with roman arches, wrought iron grilles, and brownstone piers. The gates themselves are also wrought iron. The walkway to and through the gate is concrete in fine repair, although the pathway itself dates to c. 1840, and archeological investigations indicate that the path was once paved with brick.
