While physically located in New Brunswick, the Rutgers University 911 Communications Center is a shared resource for the Rutgers communities in Camden, Newark and New Brunswick as well as the City of New Brunswick.

Overview

The Rutgers University 911 Communications Center serves as a Public Safety Answering Point operating 24 hours a day to receive 911 calls and, as appropriate, directly dispatch emergency response services or transfer and relay emergency 911 calls to other public safety agencies. Responses to calls for service will continue to come from the existing Rutgers Police Department location nearest you.

Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD)

The CAD system assists the RUPD with:

  • Receiving and managing emergency calls
     
  • Providing fast access to vital safety information such as the closest cross streets to emergency responders en route and pertinent historical information related to the calls at the address (past responses, medical conditions, known hazards, etc.)
     
  • Ensuring appropriate public safety responder is dispatched
Public Safety Radio Communications

Rutgers Public Safety operates on a P-25, 700 MHz digital trunked radio communications network statewide.

P-25 is the most current public safety communications standard available today that enables interoperability among various jurisdictions from local to county to state and federal.

Public Safety Alternate Phone Numbers

The telephone numbers for the University's 911 Communications Center have not changed. You may download a printable PDF of the Rutgers Police emergency and non-emergency lines.

Departments are advised to check their internal telephone systems and communicate to staff what prefix (i.e. 9, 8, etc) is needed to obtain an outside line in order to dial 911. Likewise, departments are advised to ensure any speed dials for emergency services (police, fire, medial) have been correctly programmed.
